Peer-reviewed Layer 1 built on academic research.

A proof-of-stake blockchain developed through formal methods and academic peer review, with a focus on scalability, sustainability, and regulatory engagement.

September 2017
Founded by Charles Hoskinson (co-founder of Ethereum); developed by Input Output (IOG), the Cardano Foundation, and Emurgo
Layer 1 · Research-Driven

Cardano launched in 2017 with a distinctive development methodology: every major protocol change is preceded by a peer-reviewed research paper, with implementations specified in formal mathematical proofs before being written in Haskell. The Ouroboros consensus protocol — the first provably secure proof-of-stake protocol — has been the foundation of the network since launch.

The platform launched smart contracts in 2021 via the Alonzo upgrade, introducing the Plutus and Marlowe languages. Cardano’s UTxO-based smart contract model differs significantly from Ethereum’s account-based model, offering deterministic transaction outcomes at the cost of a steeper developer learning curve.

Cardano has cultivated significant adoption in emerging markets, particularly across Africa and Southeast Asia, often through partnerships with educational and identity-focused projects. The treasury and on-chain governance model gives ADA holders direct voting power over protocol parameters and ecosystem funding.

Cardano is a blockchain platform built on academic research that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications while using significantly less energy than traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. What sets Cardano apart is its methodical, research-driven approach — every major feature is peer-reviewed by scientists and cryptographers before being added to the network. This careful process aims to create a more secure and stable foundation compared to platforms that prioritize speed over thorough testing. The platform's native cryptocurrency, ADA, is used to send money, pay transaction fees, and participate in network governance.
